We have indeed come a long way from those Alphabet Magnets that adorned our refrigerator, ones we occasionally moved around to spell out a word that made sense only to you. Photo Magnets are now the in-thing, and are taking over the fancy of people the world over.
But, did you know, the magnets have acolourful story of their own?
The Beginning: Magnets
The word Magnet in Greek means ‘Stone FromMagnesia’
The most popular legend on the discovery of magnets is that of a Cretan shepherd named Magnes. A little more than 2500 years ago, Magnes was herding sheep in the rocky pastures of Magnesia (Northern Greece). Suddenly, his shoes and his staff became firmly stuck to a large black rock on which he had stepped. Curiosity got the better of him and his fellow men who initially found lodestones. Lodestones contain magnetite. This type of rock was subsequently named magnetite, after either Magnesia or Magnes himself.
“Following its discovery, magnetite was surrounded in superstition and considered to possess magical powers”
The earliest known surviving descriptions of magnets and their properties are from Greece, India, and China. Nonetheless, the properties of these rocks were not put into practical use until the 12th century AD, when the first magnetic compasses were developed and used.Over time, people began to use magnets for other purposes as well, and refrigerator magnets were born.
The first fridge magnets were cylindrical or solid rectangular magnets
William Gladstone Blunt is credited with the invention of the fridge magnet in 1876. It was much later, in the 1960s, thatmanufacturers created the first “educational” refrigerator magnets - small plastic letters and numbers attached to a magnet that sticks to the refrigerator. From there, came custom magnets in the form of souvenirs, in a variety of shapes, sizes and designs to suit virtually any need or taste.
